BDMV - Full Specification Blu-Ray titles

Production of these titles is an incredibly complex operation involving several distinct processes. Although we will be more than happy to guide you through every stage of your production should you so require, you may of course provide us with properly compliant assets ready for authoring, in which case please see the PDF document "Blu-Ray Disc - asset preparation guide" in the downloads section.

Supported Video Codecs:

MPEG-2 MP@ML and MP@H/H1440L profiles (.m2v, .m2p, .mpg, .mpeg)
SMPTE VC-1: AP@L3 and AP@L2 profiles (.vc1)
MPEG-4 AVC: HP@4.1/4L and MP@4.1/4/3.2/3.1/3L profiles (.avc, .264, .h264)

Picture Size:

1920x1080, 1440x1080, 1280x720, 720x576, 720x480 not all picture sizes are supported in all frame rates - see asset production guide for details

Supported Frame Rates:

24/23.976 fps (film), 29.97/59.94 fps (NTSC), 25/50fps (Mandatory in PAL regions only, and not recommended)

Supported Audio Codecs:

LPCM 2.0, 5.1, 7.1 (.wav), Dolby Digital 2.0, 5.1 (.ac3), Dolby Digital Plus (.ec3), Dolby TrueHD (.ac3 core + .mlp), DTS-HD (.dtshd), DTS-HD High-Resolution (.dtshd), DTS-HD Master Audio (.dtshd)

DVD titles (DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio/Video)

Although not as complex to produce as a Blu-Ray title, DVD projects are still very complex to author. As with BD titles, we will be happy to guide you from initial concept through to replication and recommend the PDF document "DVD-A asset preparation guide" in the downloads section for those who would prefer to supply DVD compliant assets instead.

Supported Video Codecs:

MPEG-2 MP@ML/SP@ML VBR/CBR or MPEG-1 VBR/CBR

Picture Size:

MPEG-2 720x480, 704x480, 352x480 (525/60 NTSC) 720x576, 704x576, 352x576 (625/50 PAL)
MPEG-1 352x240 (525/60 NTSC), 352x288 (625/50 PAL)

Supported Frame Rates:

Internal picture rate - 24 or 23.976fps (film), 29.97fps (525/60), 25fps (625/50)
Display frame rate - 29.97fps (525/60), 25fps (625/50)
Aspect ratios are either 16:9 anamorphic widescreen or 4:3 full frame

Supported Audio Codecs:

For the DVD-A format, LPCM or MLP Lossless is used. (.wav, .aif, .mlp)
For the DVD-Video format, LPCM, Dolby Digital & DTS are in common use. MPEG and SDDS audio is allowed under certain restraints, but rarely used.

Supported channel configurations & sampling rates:

DVD-Video format:
Number of Streams 0 to 8
Channels/Stream 1 to 8
PCM Sample Size 16, 20 & 24-bits
PCM Sample Frequency 48kHz, 96kHz
Lossless Compression (MLP) No

DVD-Audio format:
Number of Streams 1 to 2
Channels/Stream 1 to 6
PCM Sample Size 16, 20 & 24-bits
PCM Sample Frequency 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 & 192kHz
Lossless Compression (MLP) Yes

SACD (Super Audio CD)

Mastering Audio is the same as for CD except that we use special A-D DSD converters. The sample Rate is 2.82mhz or 64 x the resolution of a CD. The typical SACD is a Hybrid Disc = Normal CD Layer and Hi Res DSD-Stereo and M-Ch 5.1 Layer all one Disc. Alternatively one can have a Stereo and 5.1 Surround Disc only or just Stereo SACD. Authoring is fairly straight forward using a special Lossless Audio encoding process.
